Ancient Chess Replica12
th
Century Persian Chess Set
as seen at the Met in New York City
A CLASSIC ANCIENT STYLE
This set of chessmen is a very careful reproduction of one of the great
archaeological
chess finds of all time. Unearthed in Nishapur, Iran (formerly Persia) an almost complete set of chessmen was dated to the late 11
th
or early 12
th
, this remarkable set was missing only one pawn!
This is perhaps the most elegant rendering of the classic ancient Muslim chess style – a form of chessmen that lasted for almost a millennium. The pieces are exceptionally smooth and consistent in form and concept, making this set stand out among the many ancient pieces that have surfaced through the centuries.
THE PIECES
The pieces are made of Hydrostone, given a special finish to recall the crackled glaze of the original pieces.
Size: the King is approximately 2 inches (5 cm) tall, modeled in the size of the original.
The pieces alone weigh approximately 3 pounds.
They are padded on the bottoms for enjoyable play, and protection of the playing surface.
“WE FOUND THE PAWN!”
While the original
archaeological
find was astonishingly complete – 31 chessmen! – and familiarly frustrating – missing just one darn pawn! …
do not despair!
–
This replica is complete, with all 32 pieces, indeed every pawn is present.
INSTRUCTIONS
Ancient rules of play are included, with clear descriptions and illustrations.
