NGC has certified more than 13,000 of these 1881 gold eagles in all grades. But it has only awarded five of those the "Star" designation. What's it mean? Up to you if it means anything.
They say it means the coin has extra nice eye appeal. It's not the same as a "Plus" or a "CAC Sticker" that mean it is really on the high end of preservation for its grade and could almost be the next grade up.
This coin has all the wear expected of an MS-61 coin. But it is really struck well. There's some real old patina on this coin on the reverse but that's pleasing if you like all-original 140 year old gold coins
