Coin History
The proof Indian Eagle series officially commenced in 1908 with a delivery of 116 pieces. All of these coins display the motto IN GOD WE TRUST as part of the reverse design, as mandated by Congress over President Theodore Roosevelt's objections. The era in which this series was delivered (1908-1915) was a time of experimentation for the Mint in the area of proof production. The Mint employed at least three different finishes for the proof Indian Eagle: the Roman Gold finish of 1909-1910 and at least two forms of matte, or sandblast texture. None of these finishes struck a receptive chord with the contemporary public, and many proof Indian Tens were melted in the Mint when they failed to sell. It is also highly likely that many pieces that were distributed were later spent and subsequently lost to future generations of collectors.
