2.5" Round Antique Chinese or Tibetan Bronze Repousse Box with Domed Lid / Gold Gilt Asian Metal Snuff or Scholar's Box / Islamic Tobacco. Shipped with USPS First Class.
This listing is for a rare antique Chinese or Tibetan repousse box made of what I believe is thin bronze. The inside of the lid has small areas that are quite shiny gold making me think that it may have had a gold gilt at one time. This two-piece box has a base and a lid that have a small cord attached. I suspect when this box was made it was held together with either metal or leather, making the cord is a more modern repair.
This wonderful box is decorated with high relief. It has a beautiful repeating design and a Greek key border with a natural patina.
The exact origin and age of this item are unknown, but from my research it seems likely to have come from southwestern China, Tibet or the Himalayas. It’s possible it was made in the 18th Century, but may also have been made as late as the early 19th Century.
This box measures approx. 2.5" in diameter and is approx. 1.17" tall. It is a really gorgeous piece.
Excellent overall condition given it's age, it has no noticeable scratches, dents, excessive dirt or creases. It does have tarnish, but no signs of heavy use wear. It has been well-loved and protected over the centuries.
