The Packers were founded in 1919 by Curley Lambeau and George Calhoun of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Lambeau asked his employer, the Indian Packing Company, for money to buy uniforms. They gave him 0 on the condition that the team be named after the company. Lambeau named the team the 'Packers'.
The Packers are called the packers because of Green Bay's meat industry. The meat industry is so large that they need many meat packers.
They were indeed named for Curly Lambeau's employer. It's not true, however, that the meat industry is or ever has been unusually large in Green Bay. Curly Lambeau just happened to work for a meat-packing company, which gave him money for uniforms in exchange for sponsorship. In fact, the largest employer in Green Bay is the paper-products industry.
By the team that provided jerseys: the Indian Packing Company.
