    Description

This is an antique clamshell modesty apron from the Kirdi people of Cameroon. The
Kirdi live in small farming communities and are known for their personal adornments especially those made of iron including the cache sexes as well as necklaces, bracelets and other attachments worn on the belt supporting their aprons. Composed of small iron strips, the pubic aprons were worn by mature married women indicating their elevated status in Kirdi society. Today beaded aprons have replaced those made of iron.
The clamshell modesty apron features iron slats that are wrappped around an iron rod and woven together at the bottom. The apron measures about 13 inches long from top to bottom and about 5 inches wide at its widest point. There is also some red ochre on threads of the belt part.
