Description
Offered is this antique set of three porcelain ceramic lidded vanity boxes, probably powder, trinket or maybe soap or cotton ball boxes, made by Tressemann & Vogt (T&V) in Limoges, France. All are light beige with gold-painted rims at the top of the bottom pieces and on the edge of the lids. The ornate handle of the lid of the largest box has also been painted gold. The undersides of all have both the company's green manufacturing mark and its red decorating mark. The marks on the two round boxes indicate the pieces were made between 1892 and 1907; there is a slightly different mark on the underside of the rectangular box, so it may have been made a little bit later. The undersides are also marked "William Lawton Wilmington", apparently a retailer or decorating company that was the American destination for the piece. The largest box is round, about 4 3/4" across and approx. 5" high with the lid on . Most of the piece is in very good to excellent condition, but there are two tiny chips, one on the rim of the bowl portion and one on the top of the ornate lid handle (see photos #5 & #6). There is almost no wear to the gold trim.
The smaller round box is approx. 3 1/2" across and approx. 2 1/4" high with the lid on. The piece is in very good to excellent condition; I see no chips or cracks. There is a slight bit of roughness around the rim of the lid. The gold has almost no wear.
The rectangular box is approx. 3 3/4" long, about 2 1/4" across and about 1 3/4" high, all with the lid on. The piece is in very good to excellent condition; I see no chips or cracks. The gold has almost no wear. The underside of the lid has a scored line design; possibly for use as a soap dish? (See photo #11.)
