ANTIQUE (c. 1930) JAPANESE ROSEWOOD SHAMISEN STRINGED MUSICAL INSTRUMENT

Description

This is an antique Japanese
shamisen
from the early Showa era (c. 1930).  The three part neck, pegs, as well as box are made of an
exotic rosewood
and ebony using an intricate mortise and tenon joinery (see pictures 7 & 8)
.   There are dates on the inside of this instrument  that go back to early Showa era.  Comes with all items seen in picture 10 including extra strings.
Overall length is 37 3/4" (96 cm)
with a box 7
" x 7 3/4" x 3 1/2" (17.5 x 19.8 x 9 cm) and a neck width of 1" at the top (2.4 cm).
This type of i
nstrument has been used for hundreds of years in Japan. In the
last picture
you can see a geisha playing a similar shamisen.
Both skins on the drum will need to be replaced and are available from many sources online. Other than the broken skins, this shamisen remains in
fine
condition
.  With the addition of the skins  this shamisen will be completely functional.
A comparable shamisen today would sell in Japan for

yet in many ways I find this one even more attractive due to its years of loving use, character and
warm aged patina
as well as its time proven, well cured stock of rosewood.
