BIG ORNATE 4.5 POUND 1870's SOMBRERO DOUBLE SILVER MOUNTED FOLK ART AMOZOC SPURS
BIG HEAVY 4.5 POUNDS FANCY VERY EARLY 1870's SOMBRERO CONCHO
DOUBLE SILVER MOUNTED ORNATE FOLK ART AMOZOC SPURS
    WITH ORIGINAL FANCY PITIADO STRAPS
This is a Fine, Rare & Early Antique Big & Heavy (4 pounds 8 oz.!), hand forged 100% original BIG IRON Vaquero spurs, with 1 5/8" SUPER WIDE heel bands x 1/2" THICK heel bands circa 1870; with fine, old, big, thick original fancy hand embroidered pitiado and buck stitched period lined leather straps. 19th Century spurs in fine 100% complete & original condition with nice old original period embroidered leathers are extremely rare. This very early spur style has several characteristics that are only found on early spurs; very thick and very tall heel bands, massive weight, and large, very early cast Iron sombrero style concho buttons and thick shanks. These 150 year old spurs were custom made to order for a Wealthy Vaquero horseman, and are completely hand made by craftsmen using only basic hand tools such as hammers, files, chisels, and grind stones, and have slight variances in size, shape and dimensions. They were made in Amozoc, Mexico, the spur capital of the world then, and for at least 300 year prior.
These full-sized Big Man's spurs are about 7" overall; with about a 3 1/4" heel band opening at the open end. The spurs were made with a 1/8" thick leather liner to keep these big heavy spurs from wearing on the boot, and reduces the opening at the end to 3". It is especially true for this style of very early Big, Heavy spurs that were made specifically for long trail rides as they would weigh down the legs and make it more comfortable on long horse back journeys. Generally, a 3" opening is considered a Mans size spur, so even with the leather insert, these spurs can fit onto a size 12 boot, which would be quite an unusual boot size for most South of the Border Vaqueros in the late 1800's.
Both the inside and outside heel bands are 1 5/8" tall and 1/2" thick! It is hard to imagine how a forger could hand forge these super wide and thick heel bands. These spurs, made for long trail rides, began to wane with improvements in transportation; and these extra heavy duty hand forged spurs quickly became a lost art form in spur craftsmanship, and were obsolete by around the 1880's.
The outside & inside Iron heel bands have a curved surface that is difficult to chisel and inlay. The outside heel bands are hand chiseled and inlaid in traditional patterns, albeit, very ornate. The outside heel bands have a traditional finely inlaid Aztec pattern border at the top, rear and bottom, with line engraved and inlaid borders above and below, showing attention to detail. The inside panels are hand chiseled and inlaid in the traditional chevron pattern but with very fine, close to each other inlays not normally seen; another attention to detail. The inside heel bands have the same finely hand chiseled and inlaid silver work, but in an unusual straight line pattern that is typically inlaid in a diagonal slanted pattern.
The large 1 1/2" diameter Sombrero style buttons are cast Iron, and only found on pre-1900 spurs. Later style sombrero buttons were made from stamped metal, and also silver inlaid. Sombrero style buttons were difficult to make and an expensive add on, especially when inlaid; and fell out of favor by spur makers and customers around the turn of the century unwilling to pay the extra amount. These cast Iron sombrero concho buttons are cast, shaped with a vertical edge and a sloping border and hand chiseled and inlaid in an Aztec pattern, en suite with the heel bands  with a chiseled and inlaid line border pattern; then drilled to accept the hand forged domed silver inlaid buttons with a cross and V shaped silver inlays / post that affixes the button to the swingers. The Sombrero discs rotate freely on the domed inlaid connectors.
The inside buttons are hand forged, chiseled and silver inlaid in the same pattern as the Sombrero center studs. The shanks have a traditional "triple eight" shape and are large; about 2" long x1 1/4" tall and 3/4" wide across the top, and each side of the shanks are 1/4" thick! The two holes nearest to the shank being hand drilled through on both sides and the end loop drilled for the rowel pins. The outside shanks are inlaid in a cartwheel circular pattern. The domed outside rowel pins are inlaid, en suite with the concho stud. The inside shanks are silver inlaid in a circular pattern. The large outside 3 3/8" diameter rowels have a medium ridge similar to Amozoc style rowels. Being hand forged, the rowels vary slightly in diameter and taper slightly from the inside to the outside. Each tine has 14 hand chiseled and inlaid ornate chevron patterns; a total of 112 chevrons on each outside rowel. The inside rowels are forged flat, with each tine having a line chiseled and inlaid stripe. The rowels have the rare feature of having a chiming sound when spun; a characteristic that advanced spur makers who knew how, used their talents to create this unique feature. Some Vaqueros were known to have a certain sound in their spurs when walking along a boardwalk, and could be identified just by the jingle / jangle of their spurs. Complete with correct, early, matching, lined leather original spur straps, hand embroidered with cactus fiber thread in an Aztec pattern, en suite with the spur inlays. The straps have a pitiado border and an outside buck stitched border with a one piece steel buckle. 19th century fancy embroidered leather spur straps that fit the giant buttons of early spurs are extremely rare, and much rarer than the spurs. Overall with a fine, naturally occurring aged patina with an untouched patina overall that collectors love to see. Provenance: purchased from the best known Iconic 50 year South of the Border Western American collector, with traces of jeweler's rouge he used to clean up spurs he brought back from Mexico in the early 1980's. In the early 1870's, and the Vaqueros on both sides of the border knew Bigger was Better, and liked Big, flashy, fancy accouterments; saddles, headstalls, spurs, guns, et al. These fine spurs show very little wear from actual wear on the Western Frontier, and have a nice aged patina overall; especially for this early style spur that was passed down from generation to generation and typically saw decades and decades of hard use; especially considering they are around 150 years old. These exceptional Investment grade fancy early spurs are very rare; especially in this fine condition; and come from South of the Border, down Old Mexico way. This is about as good as it gets for this style of a Big Early fancy Folk Art style spurs. These spurs would fit into any Spur, Espuela, Equestrian, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Vaquero, Charro, Charita, Mexican, Mexican Revolution, Old West, Western, Wild West, South of the Border, or Western Americana display.
