Tournament Cambodian Chess Setthe game of ‘ouk chatrang’ (or ‘ok’)
high quality stone set
THE ANCIENT GAME OF CAMBODIA
Cambodia is home to one of the most ancient surviving chess forms in the world. Pictured on the ancient walls of Angkor Watt, still played today on the streets, in cafes and in high level ceremonial tournaments, this is truly one of the great games of the world.
STONE COLLECTOR'S SET
This finely carved stone chess set is made with the chess
connoisseur
in mind. With especially elegant renderings of the Cambodian chess design, it includes a well proportioned queen piece, so that this set is inviting for either the traditional Cambodian game, or the better-known international form of chess.
Notice how each piece is smooth and well formed, hand crafted for a luxurious feel.
The King of this set is approximately 3 1/8 inches (8 cm) tall.
The entire set of pieces alone weighs about 4 pounds.
With the case, the entire set weighs approx. 14 pounds.
BEAUTIFUL DISPLAY CASE
This set comes in the beautiful display case shown in the pictures. The soft, velvet cover and fitted settings with white cloth give protection to this set and show off its luster, elegance and value.
DURABLE CAMBODIAN STYLE PLAYING MAT
While you may prefer to set these chessmen on a high quality standard board, the traditional Cambodian chessboard does not have the alternate colors so familiar to Western players. This playing mat is of durable vinyl, showing a photographic reproduction of a top-quality crafted board with detailed carving.
The playing mat is approximately 21 inches (53 cm) on each side, with approx. 2¼ inch playing squares.
HAND MADE DETAILS
Note that this is a hand made set, carved from natural stone.
It may have small inconsistencies in stone color and small alterations in carving detail, within the normal variation for a natural product from authentic craftsmen.
RULES INCLUDED
The rules of Cambodian chess are strikingly different from the modern international game, but more similar to the chess that was played centuries ago. A great deal of strategizing and positioning is involved, with sharp, decisive tactics and sometimes elaborate ending scenarios.
A rule booklet is included with this set, so that the player may begin playing immediately in the true Cambodian style
