  • Handmade: Yes
  • Modified Item: No
  • Condition: Purchased in the 1970s during a business trip to Egypt, and stored untouched in our warehouse since, this small 1-1/8 inch scarab is still in excellent condition (SEE PHOTOS). Probably NOT an antiquity carved thousands of years, or even hundreds of years ago, but probably carved sometime in the 1900s. I'm not sure what the hieroglyphs say, but feel free to work out a translation from the photos, below. I'd love to hear what you discover. The pewter medallion appears to be of a Pharaoh and his wife with offerings to the Sun. There appear to be hieroglyphs on the far left inside a couple of cartouches, with another smaller person below. This medallion, with a felt backing, is still in the same Mint condition as when we bought it.

    Description

SCARAB, ANTIQUE VINTAGE EGYPTIAN HAND-CARVED STONE DUNG BEETLE WITH MANY INTRICATELY CARVED HIEROGLYPHS ON THE REVERSE. ONE BY ONE HALF INCHES IN SIZE, WITH SOLID INTERIOR BUT HOLE BORED THROUGH FROM FRONT TO BACK FOR STRINGING FOR A NECKLACE OR PENDANT.
INTRICATELY AND DELICATELY CARVED FROM A BEAUTIFUL, YELLOW-TINGED STONE, WITH HIEROGLYPHS INSIDE A CARTOUCHE ON THE REVERSE.
PURCHASED ON A BUSINESS TRIP TO AFRICA IN THE 1970s, AND STORED, VIRTUALLY UNTOUCHED IN OUR WAREHOUSE SINCE, IT'S STILL IN THE SAME VINTAGE EXCELLENT CONDITION AS WHEN WE BOUGHT IT.
Although most likely NOT an antiquity carved thousands, or even hundreds of years ago, the scarab was most likely carved sometime in the 1900s. The hieroglyphs probably tell a better story of its origin, though I've never translated them (but would love to hear back from YOU, if you're able to!)
The pewter medallion was probably cast sometime in the 1900s, as well. Probably as a souvenir for tourists, but it could have had another purpose-- I'm no expert. Still in mint condition.
