In 1971 the New York Committee to Free Angela Davis printed a commercial poster which they sold as a fundraiser. The question is, where did they get the photo for their poster? In Los Angeles, smaller, 10 inch X 13 inch posters had been put up on store windows and on fences with the same image. The commercial version printed in New York used the image from that original, almost spontaneously generated poster from LA. The poster being offered is one of those really true originals. Search Ebay for "Angela Davis poster" and 188 items come up (not all are posters). None are this older version. A newly printed copy of the New York Committee edition is listed for . An original of that version is listed at 5. The Library of Congress does not show this original. The OMCA (Oakland Museum of California) collection of political posters does not show this version. Google "Free Angela Davis Now" poster, and you will not find it. Why not? Because when you tape a copy on a storefront window or nail it to a telephone poll, it does not last. This one has old tape marks at the top and bottom - thankfully the tape aged out and peeled off nicely. There is also a spot where a nail went through Ms. Davis' hair at the top of the poster - thankfully it only bent part of the poster back so it is not a real hole, just a slightly damaged spot. There are also two 1/4 inch splits on the sides. All these damaged spots are in the photos. The last photo shown is of the New York Committee to Free Angela Davis version, so you can see how it copies the one listed here. Auction is starting with a low price so everyone gets a chance.
