    JAPAN
    A rare and large woodblock printed omamori from Hoko-ji (Buddhist Temple) in Kyoto
    Vairocana Buddha and a recruiting message (?) below with the date Meiji 15 (1882). Omamori are rarely dated.

    Omamori are traditional amulets obtained at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in Japan. They may be handwritten or stamped with the temple name, the type of the protection the bestow, and may have powerful symbols or characters on them. Providing a wide range of specific fortune or protection, omamori may be displayed in a personal or public shrine.
