    Description

ANTIQUE HAND CARVED NIGERIAN FOLDING BIRTHING CHAIR - a very rare piece of vintage African art.
This is a unique folding Nigerian birthing chair dating to the early 1900s. Exact origins are unknown. It came from a collector’s estate who had lived in Nigeria. It is a one of a kind African masterpiece with detailed features and excellent craftsmanship. Made of 2” thick solid wood (possibly mahogany).
The birthing chair is considered a family heirloom and passed down through generations.  This is solid wood with hand carved detailing. This chair dismantles into two sections, making it easy to store. The 2 part chair has a slotted back rest and a straight floor leg seat.  The main part of this chair measures approximately 40"x 14 1/2"x 2".  The overall length of the seat part is 30" and the seat itself is 12" x 14 1/2” x 2". It is very heavy! And surprisingly comfortable!
Most birthing chairs are associated with Western Africa and countries such as Nigeria. The religious and medical practices are pretty much entwined in the culture. The squatting position has religious overtones as the contact with the earth indicates fertility. These chairs are usually no more than 8-10 inches off the ground so that the woman could brace her feet on the ground to assist with pushing.
The overall condition is excellent.  This is a great piece of original art.
