Description
Are you ready for a battle of a lifetime for the rest of your life? Lead Russian Tsar Peter the Great and hisPreobrazhensky Guard Regiment (that was the only Imperial Russian army unit that wore dark green coats with red facings
during the rein of Peter) into the combat against
Charles XII,
King
of
Sweden and his army in a chess battle. Interesting historic fact:
In 1700, the Swedish king routed the Russian army at Narva, on today’s Russian-Estonian frontier. Only the Preobrazhensky and Semyonov regiments (there were only two of elite Imperial Guard regiments) proved resilient, repulsing all Swedish attacks but at a high cost in casualties. In recognition of the guards’ valor, Peter awarded them some distinctive uniform elements. The two regiments were exclusively entitled to wear red rather than white stockings, symbolizing their valiant stand at Narva, “knee-deep in blood.”

Peter the Great aka Peter I or Pyotr Alekseevich (1672 – 1725) ruled the
Tsardom of Russia
and later the
Russian Empire
from 7 May 1682 until his death in 1725,
jointly ruling
before 1696 with his elder half-brother,
Ivan V
.
Through a number of successful wars, he expanded the Tsardom into a much larger
empire
that became a major European power and also laid the groundwork for the
Imperial Russian Navy
after capturing ports at
Azov
and the
Baltic Sea
. He led a cultural revolution that replaced some of the traditionalist and medieval social and political systems with ones that were modern, scientific,
Westernized
and based on
the Enlightenment
. Peter's reforms had a lasting impact on Russia, and many institutions of the Russian government trace their origins to his reign. He is also known for founding and developing the city of
Saint Petersburg
, which remained the capital of Russia until 1917 and after the break up of the Soviet Union was returned its old name.
