    Description

Rare, vintage Yoruba, Nigeria ceremonial object, probably used by a diviner priest, or maybe a king, during a dance or celebration.
The very small, older beads point to an early age, as does the signs of wear on  the cloth. They were tied together, and sold to me as a pair, and they were probably worn over the shoulders or around the neck as diviner’s bags or dance panels were, but I have no idea of their full meaning and none of my
detailed books on African beading show similar objects. The symbolism of the images (mice? chameleons? bugs?) may give some hints, but all I can tell you is the knowledgeable African man I got them from stated specifically that they were rare.
Excellent condition for their age, with normal wear; 9 1/2” L; beading tight, wear on the straps; and as I said, very old beads seen in older Yoruba beadwork on them.
