Vintage Cache-Sexe, “modesty apron" from the Kirdi people of Cameroon.
These loin cloths were worn by women and girls for both protection and to attract attention. Different designs and styles identify group affiliations, age grades, and specials conditions such as puberty, marriage, and widowhood.
The Cameroon government has long outlawed the wearing of cache-sexes, but the practice is said to continue under the cover of long robes. The glass beaded aprons reveal a variety of chevron and triangular patterens, with cowrie shells usually hung at the bottom. It is claimed that the lower portion of the apron is deliberately cut on a wedding night to symbolize the consummation of the marriage.
Beaded size: 18” W x 6” L with cowrie shells hanging 1 3/4”. Excellent condition with no missing beads or shells. Nice pattern and colors!
