    Description

    Vintage Chinese Red Document Box
If you are planning on picking up this piece at our Charlotte, NC warehouse, please contact us and schedule a pickup time as we are open by appointment.
This is an unusual box with a hinged lid. The box is painted in a brick red lacquer with an applied image of a man on the lid as well as Chinese writing. The detailed image shows the man carrying 2 large woven baskets on a long bamboo handle.
It seems the image was painted on paper and then cut out and glued onto the lid. There are 4 Chinese characters applied the same way on the right side. There is a small frame surrounding the characters that is painted directly on the lid. There is also a band of paper applied around the sides of the box under the overhanging lip. The lid has 2 small hinges on the top edge.
The inside of the box is finished in a brighter red and also has an image applied to the inside of the lid. This image is of an artist sitting at a table with a brush pot and some bowls. There are several cat statues on the table and the artist is holding one in his hand. He is painting the faces on the cat while a child or an apprentice is watching.
Overall the box is in very good condition and has a very nice patina. There is some nice crackalature to the finish on some areas but none of the paint is loose.
