    Description

This auction is for an ORIGINAL XEAK Top 40 radio music survey dated November 20, 1959. By this time, XEAK had issued 124 consecutive weekly surveys going back to 1957 and touting themselves as offering the first weekly survey in southern California. XEAK had offices in San Diego and Los Angeles, but carried a 50,000 watt signal the covered much of California. This was the third XEAK design and featured on the on-air staff in musical note graphics.
This was the starting point for many San Diego radio careers. Ernie Meyers was best known from his long-time work at KOGO. Noel Confer moved on to KDEO when XEAK became all-news XTRA. Frank Thompson and Art Way also had long careers at KOGO and Frank was also at KCBQ in the early 1960s.
The list is led by the classic Touched by an Angel’s Della Reese with
    Don’t You Know
    .
    Mack the Knife
by Bobby Darin was fading at No. 26. Jan and Dean had an early hit with
    There’s a Girl.
    The Isley Brothers charted
    Shout,
and Johnny Mathis has his classic hit
    Misty.
The bottom banner ad features Langendorf Bread that advertised heavily at the time. The survey measures 8 1/2 X 11.
There are fold creases and yellowing after 62 years. On the back is an example of how surveys were used for multiple purposes. In this instance, a math problem. There is a half inch tear in the right crease fold and a small stain next to the photo of Noel Confer.
    See also my book,
Aircheck, The Story of Top 40 Radio in San Diego
that provides a history of KCBQ and other San Diego Top 40 radio stations that provides the back story about the station and the talent from 1955 to the early 1980s. Shipping is combined for multiple purchases and free with book purchase.
